Dear Younger Me Recap

Tara’s Reflection

As I reflect back on our first artist showcase, Dear Younger Me, I am in awe of the depth of embodied storytelling that each artist brought to their piece. Everywhere in the room there was a profound sense of reverence to pause and listen as the artists shared from pivotal moments in their childhood, youth and coming of age. Reflections held pain, triumph, anger and nostalgic whimsy – mirroring to us moments that not only shaped who each artist would eventually become, but invited us, as the audience, into moments of our own reflections for our stories as well. It was a night I could live in forever.

Deb’s Reflection

When I think back to November and the Dear Younger Me showcase, I remember warmth, deep conversation and so many diverse, smiling faces. It was a night of laughter, and tears, of sharing vulnerable moments and celebrating achievements. The art was beautiful, the stories, songs and poetry shared were moving. One of the thoughts that lingers as I think about that evening is that it was a space where we were able to be artists in community with people who wanted to celebrate creativity.

In a world that seeks to divide, that looks for differences constantly, to be in a room for an evening where we were all there to create a safe space to learn and share was a magical moment captured in time. Friendships were forged, fears were conquered and imaginations were inspired with what is, and what could be. We met our younger selves there, and celebrated where we’ve gotten to and who we’ve become. I look forward to KINSHIP, and our other events, excited to see how our community continues to build and grow over the next little while.
